Statistically Optimum Radiation Counting: A Criticism of the Bradley-Marks Background Suppression Technique

Abstract: International Atomic Energy Agency Vienna Austria ABSTRACT. A general derivation is given of the conditions that should be fulfilled for the attainment of maximum statistical accuracy in radiation counting measurements. Conventional methods of measurement can meet these conditions whereas the "Background suppression " technique of Bradley and Marks cannot. Conventional methods are therefore preferred. RESUME Les comptes statistiquement optimaux de radiation: Critique de la technique de suppression du mouvement propre de Bradley-Marks On donne la dérivation générale des conditions qui doivent être remplies pour qu'on atteigne la précision statistique maximum dans les mesures du comptage de la radiation. Les méthodes de mesure courantes peuvent satisfaire ces conditions tandis que la technique de 'suppression du mouvement propre' de Bradley et Marks ne le peut pas. Par conséquent les méthodes courantes doivent être préférées. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Statistisch optimale Strahlungszählungen: Kritik des Bradley-Marks'schen Verfahrens der Untergrundunterdrückung Es wird eine allgemeine Ableitung der Bedingungen angegeben welche zur Erlangung der maximalen statistischen Genauigkeit in Strahlungszählung-Messungen erfüllt werden müssen. Die konventionellen Messmethoden können diesen Bedingungen entsprechen nicht aber das 'Untergrundunterdrückungs'-Verfahren von Bradley und Marks. Folglich sind die konventionellen Verfahren vorzuziehen.
